The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)

is a standardized system used across Europe to facilitate the recognition of academic qualifications and make higher education more comparable and transparent. It helps students to move between countries and to have their academic qualifications and study periods abroad recognized.

Erasmus+ 2021-2027 programme

The Learning Agreements must be managed online. Higher Education Institutions can do this by using the Online Learning Agreement platform or an equivalent system connected to the Erasmus Without Paper Network. Therefore, this template is provided by the European Commission for information purposes only and must not be used to manage Learning Agreements for studies. Please visit the Erasmus Without Paper Competence Centre for a more detailed data standard, to which all equivalent systems need to adhere. For further guidance on how to manage Online Learning Agreements.

Please read the Guidelines on how to use the Learning Agreement for studies. Outlines the program of studies or the traineeship to be followed by a student. It must be signed by the sending and receiving organizations and the student or trainee.

A – Student mobility for Studies

Student mobility for studies refers to the opportunity for students to study abroad for a certain period as part of their academic program. It is often supported by international exchange programs like Erasmus+ in Europe or other bilateral agreements between universities worldwide.

The main objectives of student mobility include:

  • Enhancing academic and personal growth through exposure to different education systems.
  • Improving language skills and intercultural competence.
  • Expanding career opportunities by gaining international experience.
  • Strengthening collaborations between institutions and fostering global networks.

Students usually receive recognition of credits earned abroad, making mobility a valuable addition to their education. Financial support is often available through scholarships or grants.

The system is widely used in Erasmus+ exchanges and across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to support student mobility.

B – Student mobility for Traineeships

Student Mobility for Traineeships refers to the opportunity for students to undertake an internship or work placement abroad as part of their academic program. It is often supported by programs like Erasmus+, allowing students to gain professional experience in an international environment.

Key Benefits:

  • Practical Skills: Helps students apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting.
  • Career Opportunities: Enhances employ-ability by providing international work experience.
  • Cultural Exchange: Improves language skills and intercultural competence.
  • Financial Support: Many mobility programs offer grants or scholarships to help cover living costs.

Traineeships can take place in companies, research centers, or other organizations across Europe and sometimes beyond. Students usually receive ECTS credits or formal recognition for their experience.
